Welcome to NYC!
Laying eyes on the New York City – The Big Apple 21066 box, I'm already anticipating the unique build. With 1465 pieces, this architecture marvel rises to 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) tall, spans 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide, and has a depth of 4.5 inches (11.4 cm), presenting a dense cityscape within an iconic silhouette. The contrast of the white and grey buildings against the dark apple backdrop promises a dramatic display.
Shelf-Ready Skyline
Turning the box, I get a glimpse of the finished model in a real-world setting. The back reveals a clever NPU, with the apple forming a backdrop that sets the mood, complete with greebling for stars and a crescent moon. Seeing the blueprint gives a better appreciation for the base's footprint, hinting at the secure sub-assemblies holding this dense urban landscape together.
Layered Cityscape
Here it is, assembled! The Empire State Building and One World Trade Center dominate the rear, employing SNOT techniques for their distinct textures and tapering forms. The Brooklyn Bridge's suspension cables are cleverly realized with Technic elements, leading the eye towards the iconic Statue of Liberty, a micro-build that still captures her essence. The varied heights of the smaller buildings in grey and blue create a dynamic urban flow.
Compact Brilliance
From this angle, the sheer density becomes apparent. Each building, from the curved Guggenheim to the columnar structures, is a carefully placed sub-assembly. The black base is a canvas for various greebling elements – those tiny yellow jumper plates and rounded tiles mimicking cars and street details, adding subtle life to the bustling scene. The overall footprint makes for a surprisingly compact yet detailed diorama.
Micro-Architecture Magic
The circular profile of the Guggenheim Museum, achieved with curved tiles and plates, is a prime example of NPU. Ahead of it, the cityscape uses a mix of light and dark grey plates and bricks, some employing SNOT for window details. The foreground details, like the trans-clear tiles for water features and small dark grey spheres for trees, add texture to the black tiled base, grounding the soaring structures.
Iconic Presence
Lady Liberty stands tall on her pedestal, a masterful micro-build that conveys her stature with just a few white bricks and slopes. Adjacent to her, the classical architecture of a structure akin to the New York Stock Exchange uses column elements and window arches to convey a sense of grandeur. The light blue-grey buildings behind continue the visual texture, utilizing various sized bricks and tiles to suggest depth and height.
Texture and Scale
Zooming in, the subtle greebling on the smaller buildings truly shines. Varying shades of grey and blue plates are stacked to create diverse window patterns, some with subtle SNOT applications for recessed features. Those tiny yellow jumper plates dotting the street are a clever way to represent the taxi cabs, while the trans-clear tiles create reflective surfaces on the pedestrian walkways, showcasing attention to urban minutiae.
Centerpiece City
Placed on a side table, the entire build transforms into a compelling centerpiece. The black apple silhouette, acting as a striking backdrop, frames the meticulously crafted cityscape, making it pop in any setting. This set, with its blend of iconic landmarks and clever micro-architecture, proves to be a powerful statement piece, drawing the eye and inviting closer inspection of its structural ingenuity.
